Budget-Friendly Vegetable Dumplings Recipe
There’s something truly heartwarming about gathering in the kitchen with family — laughter filling the air, flour on the table, and the aroma of something delicious cooking on the stove. That was the beautiful scene in our home as my daughters and I made these budget-friendly vegetable dumplings together.
What made this experience extra special was that it wasn’t just about food; it was about fellowship. As we rolled, stuffed, and folded the dumplings, we shared stories, laughed through small kitchen “accidents,” and answered a few get-to-know-us questions — a fun, lighthearted way for my audience to meet my daughters and see a bit of our family dynamic.
These homemade vegetable dumplings are incredibly affordable — costing around KSh. 350 ($3) in total — and are made from everyday ingredients that most homemakers already have in their kitchens. They’re soft, savory, and delicious, served with a quick homemade sauce that ties everything together beautifully.
What I love most about this recipe is how it connects to my homemaking philosophy: hospitality doesn’t have to be expensive to be meaningful. Whether you’re hosting a family meal, cooking with your children, or preparing something simple for guests, these dumplings make a lovely, heartwarming dish that celebrates both flavor and togetherness.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the entire process — from making the dough to preparing the filling, boiling the dumplings, and finally mixing a simple yet tasty dipping sauce. You’ll see just how easy it is to create something delightful and wholesome even on a small budget.
So tie on your apron, gather your little helpers, and let’s make these flavorful budget-friendly vegetable dumplings that bring family, laughter, and hospitality together — all for the glory of God.

- Slotted Spoon (for removing dumplings from boiling water)
- Tray or platter (for placing cooked dumplings)
- small bowl (for mixing the sauce)
Ingredients
For the Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp salt
- Warm water (to form a soft but firm dough)
For the Filling
- ¼ large cabbage, finely chopped
- 3 medium carrots, grated
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
- ½ tsp fresh red pepper, chopped
- 2 to 3 cloves Garlic, finely grated
- Spices of choice: paprika, curry powder, Royco/ Seasoning mix (½ teaspoon each)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 5 tbsps cooking oil
For the Sauce
- 5 tbsps soy sauce
- 2 tbsps vinegar
- ¼ tsp fresh red pepper (or as preferred)
- ½ tsp garlic, grated
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsps vegetable oil
- 2 tbsps water
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough In a large bowl, combine 3 cups all-purpose flour and ½ teaspoon salt.Gradually add warm water while mixing until you form a soft but firm dough.Knead lightly, cover the dough, and let it rest for 15–20 minutes.
- Prepare the Filling Heat 5 tablespoons of oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until tender. Stir in the grated garlic and cook until it turns lightly golden. Add the chopped tomatoes, stirring to combine. Cover and cook on low heat for a few minutes until the tomatoes soften. Stir and gently crush the tomatoes with your wooden spoon to form a thick, rich sauce.Add salt and spices (paprika, curry powder, stew seasoning) and cook for another 1–2 minutes to blend the flavors. Add a few drops of water to keep the sauce moist.Stir in the grated carrots and cook for 1 minute. Finally, add the chopped cabbage, stirring until well incorporated with the rest of the ingredients. Cover, lower the heat, and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool slightly.
- Shape the Dumplings Lightly knead the rested dough for a few minutes until smooth. Roll it out on a lightly dusted surface to a thin sheet—thin enough to handle but not tear. Cut into round shapes using a cutter or an improvised round object (a donut-sized rim works well).Spoon about one tablespoon of filling onto each round piece of dough. Fold over half of the dough to cover the filling and press the edges firmly to seal (you can crimp or pinch for design).Place the dumplings on a well-dusted tray or surface to prevent sticking.(This recipe makes about 35 pieces.)
- Boil the DumplingsIn a large pot, bring water to a boil. Gently drop in half of the dumplings. As they rise to the surface, let them boil for 3 minutes.Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a wide, lightly oiled tray or platter to prevent sticking. Repeat the process with the remaining dumplings.
- Make the Sauce In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, vinegar, fresh red pepper, grated garlic, brown sugar, and water.Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is well blended.
- Serve and Enjoy Drizzle the sauce over the dumplings or serve it on the side for dipping. Enjoy your homemade vegetable dumplings — soft, flavorful, and satisfying! As you serve, enhance your hospitality for the glory of God.
