I first made this coconut cream cheese frosting when one of my daughters requested coconut cake for her birthday.

You can find here the easy no oven stovetop coconut cake recipe I made for her birthday with budget-friendly ingredients. I used this coconut cream cheese frosting to decorate the cake.

Thankfully, you won’t need expensive equipment to make this no-mixer cream cheese frosting. A wooden spoon, bowl, and spoon is all you need and you’ll have your coconut cream cheese frosting for your cake, cupcakes, or other coconut treats.

Because cream cheese frosting is extremely expensive in our country, I work with homemade cream cheese to make my coconut cream cheese frosting. I will soon share that recipe.

Why Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting?

Frosting plays a crucial role in enhancing the flavor and texture of any cake or cupcake. While traditional buttercream is a go-to choice for many, cream cheese frosting adds a delightful tang that balances out the sweetness.

When you combine cream cheese with coconut, you get a rich, tropical flavor that makes every bite irresistible.

Whether you’re making a simple sheet cake, an elaborate layered cake, or just want a delicious spread for cookies, this frosting will not disappoint.

Coconut-based desserts have been enjoyed for generations. They are popular in tropical regions, where coconuts are a staple ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes.

Coconut adds a naturally sweet, nutty taste, making it an excellent addition to desserts. When combined with cream cheese, the result is a smooth, velvety frosting with a hint of chewiness from the desiccated coconut.

The unique texture and deep coconut flavor make this frosting stand out from traditional options.

If you’ve ever tried store-bought coconut-flavored frosting, you know that it often lacks real coconut flavor.

Many commercial versions rely on artificial flavors rather than actual coconut milk or desiccated coconut. This homemade version ensures you get an authentic taste with real, high-quality ingredients. Plus, it’s quick and easy to make with just a few pantry staples.

This frosting is not just about taste—it’s also versatile. You can adjust the consistency depending on what you need it for.

Want a stiff frosting for piping intricate designs? Simply reduce the liquid content. Prefer a softer, creamier texture for spreading on cakes? Add a bit more coconut milk. The possibilities are endless, and this recipe allows you to customize it to your liking.

Who Is This Recipe For?

This recipe is perfect for:

  • Home bakers who love making homemade cakes, cupcakes, and desserts.
  • Coconut enthusiasts who enjoy the rich, tropical flavor in their sweet treats.
  • Anyone looking for an easy-to-make frosting that uses simple, natural ingredients.
  • Those who want a unique frosting option beyond traditional buttercream or plain cream cheese frosting.

No matter your baking skill level, this recipe is designed to be straightforward and foolproof. Even if you’re new to making frosting from scratch, you’ll find this recipe simple and enjoyable to prepare.

Equipment

  • 1 bowl
  • 1 Wooden Spoon
  • 1 big sieve
  • 1 spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. margarine or butter
  • 1 tbsp cream cheese
  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 2 tbsps. coconut milk
  • ¼ tsp. vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp. coconut flavoring or extract
  • tsp. salt
  • ½ cup desiccated coconut
  • A few drops of milk (as needed)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dry Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine icing sugar, salt, and desiccated coconut.
Stir well to distribute the ingredients evenly. This step ensures that the coconut is evenly dispersed throughout the frosting, giving it a delightful texture in every bite.
  • Cream the Butter and Cream Cheese
In a separate bowl, combine margarine(or butter) and cream cheese.
Use a wooden spoon to blend them together until well combined.
If you prefer, you can use homemade cream cheese—just ensure it’s well blended for a consistent texture.
  • Add Liquid Ingredients
Next, add coconut milk, vanilla extract, and coconut flavoring to the butter and cream cheese mixture.
Stir until everything is well combined. The coconut milk enhances the frosting's creaminess, while the vanilla and coconut extract add depth of flavor.
  • Incorporate the Dry Ingredients
Gradually add half of the dry ingredient mixture into the wet ingredients.
Mix gently with a spoon to combine. Avoid adding too much liquid at this stage, as the moisture from the coconut milk will help bind the ingredients together.
  • Adjust the Consistency
Add a tablespoon of milk and continue mixing.
Once the mixture is well combined, incorporate the remaining dry ingredients.
If the frosting is too thick, add another tablespoon of milk. Be careful not to make it too runny—you want a soft, spreadable consistency that holds its shape when frosting a cake.
  • Final Mixing
Give the frosting a final mix until all ingredients are well incorporated.
The texture will be slightly grainy due to the desiccated coconut, but that’s what makes this frosting special!
It should be thick but spreadable, perfect for piping or spreading over cakes and cupcakes.
