Equipment

  • Frying pan or skillet
  • wooden spoon or spatula
  • Mixing Bowl
  • small saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking tin or tray
  • Parchment/baking paper
  • Refrigerator
  • Knife for cutting the bars

Ingredients

  • 2 cups traditional/rolled oats
  • cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • ½ cup nuts of choice
  • ½ cup raisins
  • teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • 1. Roast the oats
Place a pan over medium-low heat. Once it is hot but not excessively hot, add the two cups of traditional oats.
Roast the oats for about five minutes, stirring frequently so that they don't burn.
Once the five minutes are up, remove the pan from the flame and continue stirring for a few minutes. The pan will still be hot, so this helps prevent the oats from continuing to roast too much.
Transfer the oats to a bowl.
  • 2. Melt the honey and butter
In the same pan, add your honey and butter or margarine.
Gently melt them together, stirring until they are well combined.
Don't boil the mixture. You simply want the honey and butter or margarine to melt and combine.
Once melted, remove from the heat.
  • 3. Combine the dry ingredients
Add your choice of nuts, raisins and salt to the roasted oats.
    Mix everything together.
Then pour in the melted honey and butter mixture.
Stir thoroughly until the oats, nuts and raisins are evenly coated.
  • 4. Press the mixture into a tin
Line a suitable tin or container with baking paper.
Transfer the granola mixture into the tin and spread it out evenly.
Now press it down firmly. This is important because you want the mixture to hold together when you eventually cut it into bars.
Cover the tin with cling film.
  • 5. Chill until firm
Place the granola mixture in the refrigerator and allow it to rest for about 1–2 hours, or until it has become firm.
Once firm, carefully remove it from the tin and cut it into rectangles.
    And that's it!
