When you hear the question “What is your spiritual foundation like?” it may feel a little uncomfortable. Yet, this question is at the heart of every Christian woman’s walk with God.
My husband and I once experienced a vivid, real-life lesson on this truth while laying the foundation for one of the buildings at our ministry Centre.
As we watched with trepidation—perhaps even horror—the foundation seemed to swallow up every resource we had put aside. At one point, we sat down and asked ourselves, “Are we really prepared to see this house through to completion?” That’s when Jesus’ words came alive:
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” (Luke 14:28)
If it were not for our conviction that God had spoken, we might have abandoned the project. Years later, as I reflect on this now-completed building, one truth stands out clearly: the foundation matters.
Why Spiritual Foundations Matter
Just as a physical building depends on the strength of its foundation, our lives as women of faith depend on the strength of our spiritual foundation.
According to Google’s English Dictionary, foundation is “the lowest load-bearing part of a building, typically below ground level.” Dictionary.com defines it as “the basis or groundwork of anything.”
Both definitions point to the same truth: foundations are often unseen, but they determine whether something will endure or collapse. This is exactly how it works in our spiritual lives.
The Biblical Picture of a Strong Foundation
Jesus gave a striking illustration about foundations in Matthew 7:24–27:
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock…”
Two men built houses. Both houses faced the same storms. One stood firm; the other collapsed in ruin. What made the difference? The foundation.
Our lives may look beautiful on the outside, but if our foundations are weak—built on sand—they will not withstand trials, temptations, and storms.
Applying This to Our Lives as Women
The vision of Formations of a Noble Woman is about shaping women into the noble, virtuous women God desires. But such transformation must begin where no one else can see—deep down in the heart, in the hidden places of our character.
So, what is your spiritual foundation like?
Before we reach for makeup, lifestyle guides, or even outward measures of success, we must ask hard questions:
- Who am I when no one is watching?
- If everything external was stripped away, what would remain?
- Do I possess the inner beauty God cherishes?
- Why do I still struggle with anger, jealousy, or envy?
These are not easy questions, but they reveal whether the groundwork of our lives is solid or fragile.
Building on the Right Foundation
The foundation Jesus points us to is obedience to His Word. Hearing His teachings and living them out daily forms the rock-solid base we need. Anything else—beauty, charm, success, or approval—will eventually crumble.
For a woman longing to be formed into a noble, Proverbs 31 woman, nothing is more vital than starting with the right foundation. Your spiritual foundation will determine whether the life you are building will endure for God’s glory.
Closing Reflection
So, I’ll leave you with the same question I began with: What is your spiritual foundation like?
It may be hidden from others, but it is the unseen bedrock that supports everything visible in your life. Without it, collapse is only a matter of time. With it, you will stand strong through every season and storm.
In the next post, I’ll explore what exactly this foundation is and how we can strengthen it. For now, may we choose to begin the formation process where it matters most—at the foundation.
