Unlocking the Wisdom of the Proverbs 31 Woman
“O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows,” (Proverbs 31:2, NIV)
“What, my son? And what, the son of my womb? And what, the son of my vows?” (KJV)
The Proverbs 31 woman is often celebrated for her noble character, but before we explore her virtues, we must first examine the wisdom of the queen mother.
What is God revealing to us in these opening verses? Could there be hidden treasures in this heartfelt plea that point us to the secret of godly character?
This passage isn’t just a mother’s affectionate address—it’s a cry from the depths of her soul.
Her words are filled with love, concern, and urgency, reaching out to her son, perhaps to keep him from straying into danger.
Any mother, no matter her culture or background, can relate to this heart-wrenching call.
Today, we reflect on two crucial reasons why the queen mother is calling for her son’s attention—and why we must heed this message in our own lives.
-
The Urgency of the Queen Mother’s Warning
When a message is urgent, there is no time for subtlety. A mother’s cry is often a final attempt to wake her child up before disaster strikes.
If this son was indeed Solomon, then his mother had every reason for concern.
The Bible is transparent about even its greatest figures. 1 Kings 11:1 tells us that Solomon loved many foreign women, and they ultimately led him away from God.
But here’s the key: character doesn’t change overnight. It develops over time.
A mother’s discerning heart, coupled with spiritual intuition, often allows her to see warning signs before they manifest fully.
The Proverbs 31 queen mother’s urgent plea wasn’t just about one decision—it was about the trajectory of her son’s life.
Even today, God raises up spiritual “queen mothers”—mentors, pastors, teachers, and godly friends—who cry out in warning. Will we listen?
Many women of faith today can recall moments when they were cautioned against entering unequally yoked marriages, stepping into ungodly relationships, or making spiritually compromising decisions.
Ignoring these warnings has led to painful consequences, much like Solomon’s downfall.

Learning from the Past: Preventing Repeated Mistakes
Could it be that the queen mother had seen other young men stumble and was determined that her son wouldn’t follow the same path?
History repeats itself when wisdom is ignored.
Think back to your teenage years. The excitement of youth, the big dreams, the belief that nothing could go wrong.
Many young people, full of potential, fall because they lack guidance or refuse to take it.
At 17, I gave my life to Christ—the same age God began speaking to Joseph through dreams. A teen is not too young to connect and relate with God deeply and personally.
Now, where was I? The decision to get born again anchored my ambitions within God’s will. Unfortunately, not everyone in my generation made similar choices.
I recall a beautiful, talented high school classmate who was once an ardent believer. She sang in the choir and inspired younger believers.
Yet, in college, now that we went to the same university, she drifted into a life of drunkenness and immorality.
Her story ended tragically, a painful reminder that straying from God’s path can lead to devastation.
This isn’t just history—it’s happening now. We see young men and women losing themselves to pornography, toxic relationships, and worldly influences.
The dangers are no longer “out there”—they’re in our homes, on our screens, and embedded in our culture.
Even respected spiritual leaders have fallen, their hidden sins eventually exposed. These warnings are real, and they demand our attention.
Heeding the Call: Staying on the Ancient Path
The rest of Proverbs 31 is a goldmine of wisdom for godly living. But before we get there, we must listen to this urgent call: Will we heed the voice of wisdom, or will we ignore it to our peril?
God is still speaking through spiritual mentors, godly parents, and His Word. The question is, are we listening? Will we be women of wisdom who take the Proverbs 31 queen mother’s call seriously?
Ignoring her words means risking a life filled with regret. But embracing them means stepping into the fullness of God’s purpose for our lives.
A Prayer for Wisdom and Obedience
Heavenly Father, I recognize my need for Your wisdom. I am weak, and without Your guidance, I can easily stray. Help me heed the warnings You place in my life, whether through Scripture, mentors, or the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the humility to listen and the strength to walk in obedience. Make me a woman of noble character, shaped by Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
