Let God Direct Your Steps: Surrendering Control and Trusting His Will

Let God Direct Your Steps

Death is an unavoidable reality. None of us knows the day or hour our earthly journey will end. The truth is, we don’t control the future – only God does. Yet, many of us live as though we hold the steering wheel of our lives, making plans without acknowledging the One who truly knows the path ahead. The wise choice? Let God direct your steps.

This sobering reminder is found in Jeremiah 10:23:

“I know, O LORD, that a man’s life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps.” Jeremiah 10:23 (NIV)

Your Life Is Not Your Own

It’s easy to assume we’re in charge. We plan careers, relationships, and even spiritual goals, often forgetting to seek God’s guidance. But Scripture reminds us that our lives are not our own. We were created by a loving and sovereign God who holds the blueprint of our existence.

The Bible says in Ephesians 2:10 that “we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” This means our steps are meant to follow a divine path, not one we design by our own wisdom or ambition.

When we live without reference to this truth, we live presumptuously – steering our own course and expecting success. It may look fruitful for a season, but true, lasting fruitfulness comes only from living under God’s direction.

The First Step: Surrender Your Will to God

Letting God direct your steps begins with surrender. It starts when we make a decision to put our trust in God and accept His Son, Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior. This isn’t just a one-time decision; it’s a lifestyle of choosing to follow, trust, and yield to His leading every day.

God, as our Creator, offers us a free will. He desires to guide us, but He won’t force us. He lovingly invites us to choose Him, to surrender, and to trust His leadership over our lives.

Learn His Will Through the Word

Once we surrender, we must grow. And that growth happens as we dive deeper into the Word of God. Scripture is our compass – it reveals God’s character, His plans, and His will for us. It trains us to discern truth from error and helps us align our thoughts, words, and actions with His purpose.

As Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” When we fill our hearts with God’s truth, we are better positioned to follow where He leads.

My husband often says, “No Bible, no breakfast.” It’s not a legalistic rule, but a powerful reminder to begin each day with God – through prayer and the Word.

Over time, this daily rhythm of reading Scripture has become a meaningful habit in our home. It has shaped our mornings and, more importantly, allowed God’s Word to dwell richly in our hearts.

Because of this discipline, we’ve found that our thoughts, words, actions, and decisions are increasingly guided by the truth of Scripture. It doesn’t feel forced – it flows naturally – because the Word is in us, forming our convictions and directing our steps.

Prayer: A Daily Acknowledgment of Dependence

In addition to reading God’s Word, we must continually seek Him in prayer. Prayer is where we declare, “Lord, I can’t do this without You. Direct my steps today.” It’s an act of dependence, humility, and trust.

Through prayer, we invite God into our decisions, our relationships, our trials, and our triumphs. We look to Him – not as a last resort, but as our daily guide and Shepherd. And even when things don’t make sense, we trust that every circumstance is part of His divine plan to lead us into His purpose.

Scripture exhorts us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and encourages us to be “self-controlled and alert so that we may pray” (1 Peter 4:7).

One practice that has helped me live out this command is rising early – before the day’s responsibilities take over. Each morning, my husband and I take a moment to hold hands and pray together. Afterwards, I set aside time for my personal communion with the Lord.

This daily discipline of prayer has become a lifeline. It’s how we actively surrender our plans, submit our hearts, and trust God to lead us. Over time, it has deepened our dependence on Him – and reminded us that fruitfulness flows from His hand, not ours.

Let God Direct Your Steps – Trust the Process by Faith

The journey of faith isn’t always clear. Sometimes we wonder if we’re really on the right path. But as we continue to walk in obedience and trust, we will one day look back and see how God was guiding us all along.

You may not see the fruit of your obedience today. But over time, as seasons pass and you reflect on your life, you’ll begin to see how every moment, every encounter, and every turn was part of God’s loving plan. That is how to live a truly fruitful and impactful life, one led by God Himself.

A Fruitful Life Comes From God’s Leading

If we desire a life that matters; a life that impacts others, glorifies God, and brings deep peace and joy, we must stop directing our own steps. We must let God be the one who leads.

There’s no greater assurance than knowing you are being led by the One who sees the end from the beginning. Even when we don’t fully understand the road ahead, we can walk by faith, not by sight – because we trust the One who holds the map.

Final Encouragement as You Let God Direct Your Steps

Your life belongs to God. It’s not for you to direct your steps. Today, choose to surrender. Choose to grow. Choose to pray. And choose to trust.

Let God direct your steps – and watch Him write a story with your life that you could never have written on your own.
