Not for You, Woman of God: Walking in Discernment

Tracking the Proverbs 31 Woman – Series 6

“It is not for kings, O Lemuel—not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer.” (Proverbs 31:4)

As we continue tracking the Proverbs 31 woman, this short yet powerful verse reminds us that some things are simply not for you, woman of God. These words were spoken to a king, but they hold timeless truth for every woman who desires to walk the narrow path with discernment, purpose, and obedience.

If you’re just joining this journey, you can start by reading the introduction to the Proverbs 31 Woman series here. You can also catch up with the previous reflection from Proverbs 31:3, where we explored the contrast between godly and wicked women. Each post builds on the last, helping us uncover what it means to live with noble character in today’s world.

When God Whispers, “That’s Not for You”

There are moments in our Christian walk when the Holy Spirit gently nudges our hearts and says, “That’s not for you.” It may not be something outright sinful—it may even be something that others around us are embracing. But for you, the Lord says no.

I remember a clear moment early in my faith when God began to sanctify even my reading habits. I had been an avid reader of romance novels. After giving my life to Christ, I knew deep down they weren’t for me anymore. I let them go.

Then I found Christian romance novels. Harmless, right? Yet as I read them, I felt a quiet unrest. It was the same whisper again: “Not for you, Clara.” And so, I gave those up too—not because they were sinful, but because they were a distraction from something better.

What It Means to Be Set Apart

Just like the queen mother’s words to Lemuel, we too need to hear: “It is not for you.” Not because God wants to withhold joy, but because He wants to lead us into greater purpose, clarity, and holiness.

You are not just another woman. You are a woman of God, called to live differently. Let’s explore what this means in practice.

  1. Discerning God’s Voice in a Noisy World

Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” But in a world full of distractions, many voices compete for our attention.

To walk in discernment, the woman of God must intentionally sharpen her spiritual hearing. How?

  • Daily time in God’s Word – The Bible is our foundation for hearing His voice.
  • Consistent prayer – Talking to God helps tune our hearts to His Spirit.
  • Fasting – This discipline stills the flesh and sharpens our spiritual alertness.
  • Journaling – Writing down what God speaks helps clarify beliefs and convictions.

It’s not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes, God’s leading comes as a simple unease, a gentle conviction, or a nudge to pause. When you sense it, lean in. That might be your moment to say, “Yes, Lord, I’ll obey.”

  1. Learn to Say “No” with Confidence

As a woman of God, you’ll often be called to say no—even to things that others freely enjoy. This isn’t about self-righteousness; it’s about alignment.

Think of Daniel and his friends in Babylon (Daniel 1). They refused the king’s food—not because it wasn’t delicious, but because they had already resolved to obey God. Their “no” was born from conviction, not convenience.

As you learn to walk with God, there will be books, shows, events, or habits He’ll ask you to leave behind. And the more you say no to distractions, the more space you create for intimacy with God.

  1. Don’t Compare Your Walk to Others

It’s tempting to look around at what other Christian women are doing and wonder if your standards are too high – or too strange.

But your calling is personal.

One family may freely allow certain movies or music; another may feel led to homeschool; another to dress a certain way. You may not be called to imitate either. The only voice that matters is God’s voice to you.

That’s why discernment is so important. You can’t live a Proverbs 31 life by copying others. You must walk with the One who knows you by name.

  1. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

To walk this path, you need power—and that power comes through the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18 says, “Do not get drunk with wine… but be filled with the Spirit.”

When you’re filled with the Holy Spirit:

  • You gain boldness to say “no” even when it’s hard.
  • You grow in clarity about God’s will.
  • You walk in daily fellowship with Christ and receive strength to do His will.

If you haven’t yet been filled with the Holy Spirit, ask. Seek. Keep on knocking. Jesus promised in Luke 11:13 that the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who persist in asking.

This is not a one-time experience but a daily dependence. It is the Holy Spirit who teaches, convicts, empowers, and leads.

Why “Not for You” is a Gift, Not a Limitation

God’s “no” is not a punishment, it’s a protection.

When He says, “That relationship isn’t for you,” or “That opportunity isn’t for you,” or “That lifestyle isn’t for you,” it’s because He sees the end from the beginning. He knows what will grow you, refine you, and prepare you for glory.

His “not for you” leads you into a deeper “yes” to the life He designed you to live.

Even When It’s Hard, Keep Obeying

Jesus said the path is narrow and few find it (Matthew 7:14). The road of obedience often feels lonely. Others may misunderstand you. Some might think you’re being legalistic or extreme.

But don’t let that stop you.

You’re not trying to stand out—you’re trying to follow Christ. And sometimes following Christ means walking away from the crowd, away from popularity, and into a hidden place where only His voice matters.

That’s where noble character is forged.

Final Encouragement: Stay the Course, Woman of God

So if you sense the Spirit saying, “That’s not for you, woman of God,” don’t resist. Trust that He’s leading you out of the shallow into the deep.

Let Him set your standards. Let Him prune your habits. Let Him lead you into freedom.

What brings God the greatest glory will always bring you the deepest joy.
